The TAOS II camera mechanical parts have been made and integrated for some time. This is the first attempt to populate the sensors on the cold plate. This is to confirm that the cold plate design is consistent with the CMOS sensor package and also to check the procedure of the sensor installation with the tool we developed. In the process, we used the mechanical samples and engineering devices we have. There are 4 mechanical samples, one front side illuminated device and one back side illuminatd engineering device.
In order to handle the device safely, we made a special tool that can be attached to the side of CIS 113 sensor. With this tool, the sensor can be removed from the e2v package and be installed on the cold plate. Also, a special handling box is made to transport the cold plate assembly in and out of the clean room where the sensor installation is made. The installation was done from Aug 30 to Sep 1.
The tools needed for the CMOS sensor installation.
CIS 113 sensor removed from the e2v package.
The first sensor installed on the cold plate.
After we installed four sensors, we found the tool interferes with the support structure of the cold plate. It is because the tool was made before the last design change of the cold plate. We forgot to modify the tool after the change. Luckily, the tool can be trimmed relatively easily and we were able to modify it in one day. The sensors can be successfully installed on the cold plate.
After the modification, the sensor can be successfully installed.
All 6 sensors were installed. The distance between the two sensors is about 1 mm.
